Abstract
Purposes: The purpose of this study was to investigate perceived illness consequences by patients on hemodialysis and to examine the impact of perceived illness consequences on depression and health status.

Methods: A secondary analysis using survey data was performed for 228 adult patients. To measure perceived illness consequences, depression and health status, Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-12 were utilized. Date were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation, and multiple regression.

Results: Perceived illness consequences scored 3.88 out of 5 points on average. Perceived illness consequences were positively correlated with depression and negatively correlated with health status. According to the regression analysis, perceived illness consequences and monthly family income were discovered to account for 21.8% of the variance in depression, whereas perceived illness consequences, monthly family income, job, and age were found out to account for 27.5% of the variance in health status.

Conclusion: The results of the study emphasize the importance of beliefs related to the experienced impact of illness for health outcome in hemodialysis patients. Health care providers should assess the patient¡¯s environmental context.
